So what's happening with the water stuff?

A question I often get asked is along the lines of "what is happening with the water 'stuff' I was involved with?", so I thought it would be best to provide an update on what is happening in follow-up to the India work and what else is in the pipeline (ha ha, a poor attempt at engineering humour...) .

India
Jason James, Tim Sullivan and myself met with Jayakumar (the head of BBCM who are the local organisation operating the Kandili clinic) last Wednesday at Jason's house to discuss the follow-up actions to the water project Tim, myself and Michael Dunjey undertook in late January. It was a fruitful meeting were we agreed on 1) providing water tanks and piping for the clinic, with work hopefully occuring in time for this year's monsoon; 2) providing water collection and storage for 1 or 2 of the poorer villages as a demonstration to the other villages of the opportunities and simplicity of rain water harvesting; 3) a roll-out to other villages. One area that needs further pray/discussion is in the consultation with local/state government over the poor condition of reservoir in the area and a combined effort to tackling issues of water conservation and education. We are also looking at follow-up visits to assist in installation or testing.

Bali
I have volunteered to be part of a group to look at the next stage of a water project in Tenganan in Bali for Jerome Bowen through my links with Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Jerome visited Bali for 3 months from Dec 05 to Feb this year as part of his studies at UWA to review "Characterising Water Resources for Community Capacity Development: Tenganan, Bali" in partnership with EWB and local group Yayasan Wisnu. The first meeting of our group is next weekend (June 24 or 25) and we will examine the characteristics of the community water resources and formulate recommendations / options for the project to improve the water situation. In August Jerome will return to Bali to present his findings to stakeholders and also look at opportunities for EWB to assist in the implementation.

BIG news

I have some BIG news ... drum roll ... Tammy and I are engaged!!!! Yes I asked the love of my life to marry me on Saturday morning and she said yes :)
"So how did it happen and what does the ring look like?"
I picked Tammy up from her place for brunch down at South Perth foreshore, stopping off for some food on the way. I grabbed a box from the car with the picnic blanket on top, which Tam queried but I explained that it was my picnic box and contained cushions, etc. Anyway I chose a spot to sit near some trees away from the play area and path as well as a bit of distance of the car. As we put our box/bags down I asked Tam if she would go and get my mobile I had (deliberately) left in the car. As she left I brought out the picnic blanket and then started setting up the 26 care bears I had also in the box ... Why care bears? Well Tammy loves care bears and collects them (she had 15) so I had been eBaying for the last 4+ weeks to gather a 'few'.

As Tam returned from the car she noticed the care bears but thought that I was maybe arranging a 'teddy bears picnic' idea. I called out saying that I had invited a few friends to join us. She came over with a big smile (and a bit of a quizzical) look on her face to have a closer look. I pointed out each of the bears and said how I had been collecting them, and then pointed out a small care bears bag that I had also got. I proceeded to open the bag and remove 'love-a-lot bear' and said how I loved her alot (plus a few other things about how special she was to me). I then went down on one knee and remove the ring box from the bottom of the bag and asked her to marry me ... and she said yes. Apparently I was shaking a bit but that soon passed after a long hug :)

We then finished our brunch, I opened some champagne that was also hidden in a cooler bag in the box and we proceeded to text and phone people for the next hour or so.

ACOM Graduation

I know it's been a long time since I blogged but I thought it worthwhile to reflect on Saturday night. I, along with 6 others, graduated from the journey that is ACOM, reaching the destination we had set our sights on many years before. For me it took 5 years, mostly part-time, to complete my Bachelor of Theology. A time which was certainly stretching, a time that was revealing of self and God and my relationshipwith others, and a time of stepping out in faith. Looking back at where I have been shows the huge steps God has taken me on and the way he has shown me he his love and grace.

Thinking that God had gone and forgotten me on the dating/relationship stakes (well not really, but it was seeming like it) along comes the lovely Tammy Hart :) God is good!!

Mmmm coffee ... and Civet poop!?

Have just read an article on how Phillipinos have a new taste for coffee that comes via the poop of Civets! Here is an extract thanks to BBC News (read the full article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4896230.stm):

The Philippines has recently discovered it produces one of the world's most expensive and coveted kinds of coffee. But it comes from an unusual source - the droppings of a nocturnal, cat-like animal called the palm civet.
Known locally as alamid, civets are carnivorous but they also have a taste for the sweet, red coffee cherries that contain the beans. The beans pass through the civet whole after fermenting in the stomach and that's what gives the coffee its unique taste and aroma.

Suppose it gives a new meaning to chocolate coated coffee beans. Me wants some of that ... not!

Memories of insecurities

Yesterday's Garfield comic gave a good insight into the insecurities in being single (and male), especially in regards to trying to read the body language of the opposite sex. They resonated in a way with some of my past feelings ... which now have been thankfully purged :)

Round 2 AFL wrap-up

Well another round is over and it feels like footy season again. I didn't have much of a chance to see the games on the weekend, but the bits I heard on the radio and glanced on the TV or internet showed that there are a few teams stamping their authority, a few with question marks and others already being written off. I managed only 5 this week in my tipping, being let down by the Kangaroos, Swans and Crows.

My views...
- The Saints finally beat a dissapointing Tigers who are now good bets for wooden-spooners this year, the Saints however were less than convincing
- A dominant Geelong beat my Kangaroos boys and showed why they are early season favourites, while the Kangaroos have a question mark (what's new!) as to where they will finish
- After an tight opening to the Bulldogs-Demons game, the Bulldogs ran away with a win and show they will be up there at the end of the year, while the Demons wallow winless
- Despite promising signs the Dockers were less than impressive in beating the Blues, leaving question marks against both teams
- Port Adelaide continued the Swans pain beating them at the SCG and proving early knockers of the Swans to be correct, while the Power's form is patchy
- The Eagles gave many of their fans a heartache by scraping home by 2pts against a fast-finishing Crows, and both teams will be challenging at the end of the year
- The Magpies ended up winning easily against the Hawks, leaving question marks against the Hawks and some promise for the Magpies early season

'Fitness' for work

This morning I attended a 'Fitness for Work' presentation as part of me working on a Rio Tinto project at the moment. Before I went I thought ho hum, been there done that, heard all there is to know about what is mostly a drugs & alcohol issue, but I was pleasantly surprised with what was raised/discussed. The presenter (a pyschologist contracted by Rio Tinto and many other larger mining/construction/transport companies) firstly unpacked the whole area of fatigue, mental & emotional stresses, and medical issues such as migraines & epilepsy - introducing each as things 'you won't see in your wee' (ie not detectable by D&A screening). Early attempts at looking at what it mean to be fit and able to perform at work (especially in regards to making proper judgements) always focussed on D&A but now at least most companies see that the picture is alot larger and organisations have a duty of care to educate their staff/workers on wider issues and provide counselling/support services. No longer is it there the fear of being fired if you stuff up - for as while they "would rather not know" of any issues they would rather know and help someone through the issues (and that it not just for the person in their work environment, but also in the family setting) than not know and have to pick up the pieces when it was 'too late'. More emphasis is also being put on self management and peer support in such things.
The second part of the presentation looked at depressants, stimulants and haluccinagents and the disturbing increase in the usage of speed and designer drugs and the effects they have on the body. The presenter had copied several articles from newspapers, including one title "pyschotic dawn of a new ice ige" which looked at the mental health implications of drug usage. One confronting stat she raised was that 60% of long-term beds of Greylands hospital are set-aside for amphetamine pyschosis and that Charles Gardiner has padded rooms for patients who are affected by amphetamine based drugs for the safety of workers as well as the persons own well-being!

Here you go ... the latest shots of the kitchen part of the reno. As you can see it is really taking shape - over & rangehood, plus 2 overhead cabinets to install then it is tiles and a bit of painting and all will be done. Then to start on the bathroom!

Round 1 AFL wrap-up

Round 1 of 2006 is over, finally (as it was completed over 5 days! - what were the AFL thinking?), and it presented a mix of predictable results with a minor 'shock'. It was a good tipping round for me with 7/8 and only one off the points margin for the Eagles-Saints game ... have to wait till tomorrow morning to see if I won any of the comps I am in.

Some highlights & lowlights:

The Kangaroos (whoo hoo) had a great come-from-behind win to knock-off Port at home with Wells kicking 4
The Blues had a shock win against the Demons with first-gamer Murphy putting in a good display
The Eagles finished off the Saints in an inaccurate opener
The Dockers put in a shocker (for a change?) going down in a tedious game to the Hawks
The Bulldogs opened a can of whoop-arse on a pitiful Tigers
The Bombers put away the 'we shouldn't have been in the grand final' Swans
The Crows held off the Magpies (poor Eddy, ha ha)
The Cats (the Kangaroos opponents next week) continued their early season form against a dissapointing Lions outfit

Yep, the Eagles and Saints kicked off the 2006 season last night in what was an inaccurate game, but the Eagles won't be complaining about coming away with a win after their preseason 'issues'. The Kangaroos face off against Port Adelaide on Saturday night in what should be a good test for both teams ... I'm looking forward to the 'reaquaintance' of Daniel Motlop (now with Port) with his ex-Kangas team mates! The Kangas usually start the season well, so hopefully that trend can continue, but without the mid year slump they often experience.

I'm running the big tipping competition at work this year (got 60 signed up to date) in what is usually a pretty tight contest to find out who will finish on top. I am involved in a few other competitions - no not for the gambling aspect, rather the social aspect of being a footy community ;) - so have to remember to get my tips entered/sent to all the right places/people on time ... doing well this week to forgot Roo's competition, doh!

I subscribe to a few comics (I get daily emails for Dilbert, Calvin & Hobbes, and Garfield) and can often relate pretty closely to the things that characters say or the stuff they are faced with. It's hotting up for the first White Band Day for 2006 to be held on April 2.

Our goal is to influence the next Federal budget, to be released in May. In the 2006 budget, we are asking the Australian government to start delivering on the Prime Minister's promise to increase aid funding to $4 billion a year by 2010.

Where: Kings Square, Fremantle (Opposite Town Hall)
When: 1pm, Sunday the 2nd April
What: A huge rally uniting supporters of MAKE POVERTY HISTORY along with volunteers from Oxfam, World Vision, the Oaktree Foundation and other non-government, not for profit organisations.

There will be inspiring speakers, African drums, petitions and an opportunity to sign some 'aid dollars' which will be put in the aid o meter until it reaches 0.5 Gross National Index (GNI). We will then hand over our dream aid package to a lucky volunteer who wants to be the treasurer.

This is an amazing opportunity to get our message out there and build support for the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign.

A few 'doh' moments

'Doh' moments are those things we do when we are a bit absent minded, tired, distracted, etc. and end up injurying ourselves or causing a bit of damage to our stuff ... Here are few from my weekend (I meant to blog this early but have been busy!):
- stabbed myself with scissors while putting up street signage for Learning 4 Life Garage Sale early on Saturday morning
- over-planed (ie took too much off) a panel in my kitchen reno - the old adage of measure twice and cut once didn't happen, hence the mistake!
- scratched the side of my car as I reversed out of a friends driveway trying to avoid a brick post box and ended up collecting the neighbours metal post-box...

Water issues

I've heard a saying "Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink" and that is becoming true for many parts of the world. The scarcity of safe drinking water is impacting a large percentage of countries, both in rural parts (as I saw on my trip to India) due to climate changes but also in large urban areas where mismanagement has caused huge problems. Ewww, smelly!!

Not the most pleasant of bus stop waits this morning as I had the misfortune of having a septic pumping truck parked nearby as it was doing it's business (hmm good pun!) at the Victoria Park Hotel/Cheers Cafe. I thought that I could stand it (I've spent many occasions working at Wastewater Treatment Plants), but this was too much (ripe is an understatement), so to stop from gagging had to find a spot upwind where I could wait and still see the bus. It was interesting though (in a sick sort of way) to see the early-morning workout people who had finished their boxing circuit walk out and be confronted by the smell, holding their breath as they hurried to their cars...

... and then it was gone!

Memories of madness

I am just finished watching the "Riots and Revenge" doco on ABC's 4 Corners about last December's riots and mob-attacks in Sydneys western beach suburbs. To relive the images was shocking, but to hear the stories from both sides and the 'justification' from those involved - the lostness of so many people, youths who were tanked up on booze and seeing red through what seems a history of tensions between the various groups in the communities. I recognise that there was/is a cultural problem with third-generation middle-eastern guys wanting to 'claim ground' in the Sydney suburbs, but to retaliate 'eye-for-an-eye' and the shear` cowardice' of both camps setting on innocent individuals was sickening - the escalation...
This a deep social issue for Australia at large, maybe a sign of things to come reminiscent of what happened in France recently. There was talk of reconciliation, but true reconciliation can only come through the cross, through meeting on the common ground of Jesus - realising our humanity and falleness and seeking to find the peace that only God can bring to this world....

Hoops, hoops and more hoops

What the? No, I haven't gone completely mad, though gradually moving that way ;) I'm talking about some of the stuff that happened at the East Vic Park/Kent Street Youth Group we ran last night. As well as several random 'all-in' games like N-E-S-W, in/out the pond and a bit of dodge, we broke the kids (38 there last night, compared to 42 the previous f'night) into 6 groups of 6-7 and I got to run the hoops game ... this was a time trial to see how quick they could get their whole team through two hoops. I watched this game at the Como Yr 8 camp a couple of weeks ago (see any earlier post - Busy Day), so it was interesting to compare how a slightly younger crew would handle the team work of planning and execution. They did pretty well with the quickest team doing it in 4.22s - they had the benefit of being able to fit all but one of their team in the hoops and having the other member help squeeze it down, then pop through it themselves.
The Youth Group has gone well this year since we decided to move the Yr 6, 7 East Vic Park Primary kids to incorporate Yr 8 of Kent Street High and use their gym. It will be great to see numbers grow (hopefully matched by a growth in numbers of leaders!), building relationships with the kids and parents as the year progresses...

A focus on engineering assistance

Yesterday had a flavour of meeting with like-minded people to discuss, and see examples in practise, of how engineers can practically assist disadvantaged people both here in Australia and overseas with sustainable engineering practices. At lunchtime I shared on my India trip in a talk at my engineering company, and later that afternoon went along to a meeting of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). My talk was received well and it was good to get some feedback from others on some simple steps to assisting the locals with their water needs, as well sharing insigts of India, bangladesh, Nepal... At the EWB meeting it was very positive to hear of recent projects in East Timor and Bali (both still ongoing) assisting with water and sanitation needs of remote villages, as well as local endevaours to raise educational awareness in schools and in the broader community with campaigning initiatives - check out the website for more details!

Today sees me closing my time as coordinator of LifeStre@ms7 at SPCC, handing over the reigns to enable me to focus on a bit of 'tent-making'. I will still be sharing in the nights however by presenting as part of some of the Streams, as I see it as a community-wide responsibility to share and equip others in the body. Tonight I will be sharing an introduction to blogging - not that I am in anyway an expert, rather someone who has dabbled for a while (a bit more of late) and enjoys the medium! I am looking forward to shedding light on what blogging is and how people can get involved for themselves.

- meeting with Jason and Fran about Kandili stuff (Fran flies to India on Saturday for 6+ mths)
- ran games, etc. at Como Year 8 camp at Pt Peron for a couple of hours
- late dinner at HJs on way home - got there at 9:58pm, 2 mins before closing - they handled the 10 of us well!
- quick check of emails and a bit of blogging
- bed ...

Kids with cameras

Saw an excellent documentary Tuesday night on SBS, titled "Born into Brothels" (2004). It covered the story of an Amrican photographer Zana Briski who befriended a group of 8 children (5 girls, 3 boys) in Calcutta's (now know as Kolkatta, India) red-light district, using the camera as a tool to give the kids hope and a purpose in life. Each chiled was born into the life of a brothel, with most kids having great-granmothers, grandmothers and mothers who were prostitutes, and most males in their families were non-existent (either left or were absent through drugs/alcohol). The documentary recounts the story of each child, their amazing photographic skills and the struggle to find schools that will accept them. I found it hope-filled, but also frustrating with the barriers placed before them by schools, government and by the families themselves. One thing that stuck out was that each child honoured their fathers and mothers despite the situations they lived in!

That is part of the verse that was in my farewell/thankyou card from the SPCC ministry team which I received at the ministry team/elders lunch after church on Sunday. That morning at church I shared with the wider SPCC community where God is calling/lead me. It was great to share my heart and passion and have others stand with me in prayer!

Simla similar to Shimla?

To quote from the infamous Timmy, Simla is simlar to Shimla as they are in fact the same place - India has a great habit of using a multitude of spellings for the same place ... the most we noted was for Kandili, also Kanthili, Kandhili... and probably a few more we didn't see!

Anyway here are a few photos of Simla - the largest hill station of the India Himilayas - which was unseasonably lacking in the white stuff, reaching a mild 13 degrees in the middle of the day. We travelled up on the 'toy train' which gave spectacular views of the valleys and snow capped peaks of the next mountain ranges as it clattered through the many tunnels and over the ornate bridges. The city itself is all squeezed onto the near vertical slope as you can see!

Another slightly random act of kindness

No not the 'stalker' this time (apologies to Anonymous who denies stalking me) but a guy I encountered this morning. I popped into a paint shop (identity kepy secret for the guys sake ... and also to imply a bit of scandal and drama) for a 4L tin of white ceiling paint for my 'reno room' and was looking at a particular stack when a guy, obviously a painter due to paint spatters all over him, but I assumed he worked for the shop as he had a shirt with the logo on. He asks me what I need the paint for and then directs me to some other "fabulous stuff" but it only comes in 10L tins which were a bit much for me. So we head back to the first pile of tins and grab one ... and then I get it - well actually when he said "pretend that your with me" - he didn't work there and was a 'normal' painter coming in for his own supplies. So I get to pay for the paint based on his account price (no questions asked by the young guy at the counter, or his boss) ... and save a huge $20 ($38 rather than $58), not bad! So as we left I grabbed his card, exchanged 'pleasantries' and went our way. You can't beat great timing and guys who go out of their way to show 'random acts of kindness' to others!

Ouch this is maybe a bit too close to the truth... I can certainly remember feeling that way upto a couple of years ago until I felt settled in self-thanks to the help of prayer, mentoring and a close group of supportive friends. Of course I'm not saying a girlfriend wouldn't be a nice!

Starting a new adventure

When I indicated that I had made a decision re my future earlier in the week, I kept it pretty vague till I had made things formal, well it's now a bit more formal so I can let you in on the news. My recent trip to India confirmed the call God had given me glimpses of over the last couple of years, that of realising my passion for utilising my skills in water engineering to benefit those who need it most in developing countries; my passion for bringing a compasionate & just message to the poor and disadvantaged.

The shape of what is ahead is yet to be revealed but I have already started getting in touch with a few contacts both here and in India to see how/where/when I can be involved. Here is the message sent by John Bond (Senior Minister at SPCC) re changes ahead ...

Hi Team,
Just a quick note to let you know that David and I have just had a very special hour sharing with Connell talking over and praying about his future ministry.
It has become increasingly obvious to Connell that God's call and his ultimate future is serving in the developing world. He has a strong conviction that he is to move into this ministry by the end of 2006.
He has asked to be released from his commitment with LifeStreams, Faithworks and Life Groups. We believe this is what the Lord is wanting for Connell at this time. He
has the opportunity to work an extra day in his profession and raise/save extra
resources for the future.
Connell is going to share with us as a team next Sunday at our luncheon when we will be together. That day will give us a special opportunity to say thanks etc. He remains at SPCC and is committed to his groups, East Vic Park and teaching various Life Streams. We will look forward to sending him out as one of our Apostle Paul's into the near future.

Random act of kindness?

Leaving my place this morning on the way to church-work and noticed that someone had replaced the missing finial (the 'bobble' that sits on top of the posts in a picket fence) - it happened to be grey rather heritage red, and was a different shape, but that was secondary to the thought/act I'm sure. So I get thinking again is this linked to my secret admirer from valentines day, is this a friendly neighbour, ... or a stalker?! Well little do they know that I still have the missing finial in my shed from when someone kindly removed it and left it in my garden about 12-18 months ago ... should put it back on one day, just like when I repaint it ... hmmm one day!

Aaagghh I'm surrounded by madmen! Currently working in project office and a new guy started work yesterday who has preceded to mumble, cough and swear at himself and the computer most of the day. Oh joy, when he is now being joined by another guy to the other side of me who complains, and swears at his computer, chair and missing bin... Good Times !!

I feel like I am starting to get back to some sort of 'normality' now... the fog is lifting and I can see clearly now (oh no I have starting singing - doh). The veil has been removed - well more like I can peek through to see where I going! I have some decisions formed, but am still giving them a bit of time before 'going public'

The waiting game

I've heard the saying "no news is good news" but is that always the case? Could it also be indifferent or bad news?! The situation could be waiting on the response to a job interview, waiting to hear a reply to a heartfelt correspondence, waiting on a refund cheque from the taxman to arrive, or waiting on the speeding ticket you thought you got.

Well for me in this instance I have been waiting to hear from someone by email (even though I have only known them for a short time I treasure their correspondence) who I haven't heard from for nearly two weeks (their identity will be hidden for 'matters of national security'), and of course (well for me anyway), as time stretches I have been going through all the different scenarios in my head as to why I haven't heard anything yet...
- the pessimist: they don't care about you; they want to ignore you and hope you go away; they have forgotten you (great impact made!) ; they are thinking about how to let you down easy
- the optimist: they have been so impacted that they are speechless; they are thinking up a great reply; they have problems with their email system; they have been busy with work, travel, etc. and really want to reply but haven't been able
- the realist: there are cultural differences over the speed of replying - they don't see it as a long time; they are teaching me to be patient - waiting for the things that really matter; they are unsure as to what to say and waiting on discernment before replying

Oh well, patience is character building ;)

What irks me!!

I felt frustrated this morning as I got into work... Firstly, the bus driver (No.177 bus at corner of Kent St, you know who you are!) went straight past me at the bustop, even making eye contact with me as I waved madly for him to stop (thoughts unbecoming then enthued... then thoughts of litigation against Transperth for loss of working hours). Some cyclists in town then decided they would try to run me down while walking on the footpath (I wish they would make up their mind if they are roadusers - as they legally should be - or pedestrians - and should walk with their bike!).
Don't you just love Monday mornings ;) ... I'm not a pyscho, really!

Memories of Masala

Aaagh - the memories are still strong. Masala tea was a bit of a staple for our team (well at least Michael & I, Timmy had black coffee everywhere) during the time in India. I bought a packet of Masala Chai while at Delhi airport so will have to sample it soon to drink in the reflections, but probably not tonight. I am mulling over decisions of future (still) and have made some decisions but will chill for a week or two more before making them final - the return from the trip is still 'fresh' and I am still in process mode... All I know is that India will play a strong role for me; that is where my passion(s) lie and where I feel God is calling me!

The Impact of India

I'm back in Oz and amd still feeling deeply impacted by my time in India! Today was a bit harder, trying to settle back into 'routine' while still having memories of sites and people encountered during the 2 weeks our team was away. God has been speaking to me a bout a few things with regards mission, relationships, vocation .. stuff to pray through for discernment over next few weeks!

Indian travels

Me and two other guys (Tim Sullivan and Michael Dunjey) are off to India on Thursday morning for 16 days, predominately to do some reconnaissance in regards to water supply for a holistic community health clinic in Kandili which my church (South Perth Church of Christ as part of Cosmos Health Care initiative) has assisted in developing with local churches - see the following website for more details: www.cosmoshealth.org.

So what are we doing? here is a brief itinerary:
Jan 19 - travel via Singapore to Chennai
Jan 20/21 - time in Chennai and then train to Bangalore
Jan 22 - Church in Bangalore and meet partner church and college workers
Jan 23 to 27 - 5 days recon in Kandili area (37 villages + health clinic) plus meetings with government/water board officials, then train back to Chennai
Jan 28 - travel north from Chennai via Mumbai to Delhi (fly)
Jan 29 to Feb 2 - Visiting Delhi, Agra, Taj Mahal, and possibly Shimla (or other mountain camp)
Feb 3 - return to Perth via Chennai and Singapore (fly)

Really looking forward to it - so please remember us while we are away and I will update with news of what happened when we get back

No nothing about marriage it's about renovations

Yes I've been busy renovating part of my house (rear two rooms are now one and bathroom widened) since I finished studies in early December and have taken a bit of time off over Christmas/New Year. Here are a couple of progress photos of where it all stands... I'm getting the floors sanded/sealed when I am in India over next couple of weeks (see next post)

While these are better known as the words of Jesus (John 19:30), they were also my utterance as I sent off the last assignment for my ACOM degree!! While I have learnt a huge amount about myself, God and community, and found the course and conversations highly beneficial, I am very much glad at this time that it is 'done and dusted' ;)

Now to set full boar into my house renovations... and also find a chance to relax!

I usually find myself saying "when I have more time I'll ..." alluding to the fact that my mental energies are often tied up in study, ministry, work, etc. and needing to squeeze 'recreational' and social things in the gaps. One thing that I have been tardy in is posting to my blog - YES I AM SLACK! Anyway I'm in the last few weeks of ACOM study (for at least the next couple of years)and then have the 'reward' of starting my renovations.

When I have more time I'll:

put more time into relationships
play some golf
put my feet up
enjoy a walk in god's creation
have the flexibility to serve and work with others - there are so many things I could do...
read the books I want to read
...

Ticking down towards footy's big prize

Off to Melbourne early Friday morning to soak in some of the atmosphere of Grand Final week and hopefully catch the big game next Saturday arvo ... still pondering on whether to catch the Friday night Saints v Swans game, but will be glued to the TV or big screen this Saturday fo rthe Eagles v Crows game to hopefully get the Eagles over the line and give me and my mate Rod (check out his shedtalk blog) a good chance of getting tickets to the big game!
... at least focussing on the footy has distracted me from pondering too much on the cricket!

A worthwhile challenger to cricket's current champions

I am a bit tired and bleary eyed after staying up for another action packed day/night of the Ashes and though I would have preferred a stirring win by the Aussies, the Poms certainly did prove worthy winners. No doubt there will be a few discussions and some repocussions out of the series such as coaching, captaincy, batting spots, depth of squad, etc. but the Aussies will hope to regroup mentally for the 'World Series' matched next month...

Vale 'Dorrie'

Just got off the phone from my dad to have the news that my grandmother Dorothy 'Dorrie' Hill passed away tonight in Hobart at the ripe old age of 94. Mum had told me this morning that she had a bad turn during the cold weather of a couple of days ago and was struggling both physically and mentally. She was being booked into hospital tonight but God (and Dorrie)decided it was time. Even though it was sudden, I'm glad that she passed quickly and I can celebrate the life she has lead and her quick wit even though her body would remind her she was getting older. No letter from the queen for reaching the century, but she gets to go 'home' and receive a new body that never ages.

I'd like to think that there are some more pieces to the puzzle that is my future...well one can hope?!
Being involved with Micah Challenge at a city level and taking part in the WA TEAR Conference last weekend, along with some of the Scriptures God has been giving me has certainly been pointing my attention back to my heart for using my engineering and ministry skills for the 'least of them'. God has been prompting me in a few areas (indication of some doors looking to 'open' and others looking to 'close') so plenty to pray into ... though my current attention is firmly on completed my Trimester 2 assignments due in a couple of weeks!

On Bangladesh related news, I gave the go-ahead on an article to appear in the next Compassion magazine on the opportunity I had to meet my sponsor child Shajohn (see photo) - have a read if you get a copy ;)
I also got an email the other day from another BanglaDEEPer (Yvonne from Tassie) who is setting up a blog with some photos of our Bangladesh experiences - check it out at 'Visit to Bangladesh'.

Stirring the pot

The pot is being stirred! Seeing Mother Teresa last Wednesday night and hearing from Ash Barker over the weekend has certainly stirred my 'melting pot' of what the future holds in regards heart for mission, community development, and being a voice for the 'voiceless' ... and that is sure to continue with Micah Equip this coming Saturday and the TEAR state conference on Aug 6-8! The images of the poor and beggars in India, as well as sensing Ash and UNoH's heart for shining light and love into communities of the poorest of the poor, brought me to memories of Bangladesh and the opportunities my future holds. Still alot to be unpacked out of that!

Singleness

Last night at Sund@y7 I was part of a panel sharing on the topic "Singleness & Sexuality". The night opened with a great clip from the TV series "Coupling" and then lead into a couple of scenes from the movie "Alfie" (the remake) which provided some commentary on society's views on singleness. We then had a panel time with some prepared questions before opening it up to the 'audience' for a few questions - the audio recording of the night should be on the website soon...
I felt it was a good night, and it provided plenty of opportunity to chat with people afterwards and look at what my church (and the larger church) could be doing with singles in mind. The thing that has stood out to me on the whole issue is settledness in self, having an active & growing relationship with God (as Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart"), and a group of supportive friends who you can laugh with as well as keep you accountable.

Oh well it was a good game, and while it's hard not to focus on the lack of free kicks in front of goal in the first quarter and the botched shots on goal in the last quarter, the result was probably fitting. Also if it wasn't for Wirra in thoise last few minutes I'd say the Roos would have snatche it... It certainly showed that the Kangaroos have it in them to match the teams who will be in the finals!

'Carn the Kangas

Forgot to mention below that I saw the mighty Kangaroos kick Docker butt a couple of Sundays ago. After a shaky month or so with some losses strung together they seem to be back on track and front the Bombers this weekend before tackling the Eagles the following round! I've got my flights for the Grand Final (and Prelim weekend) booked so still unsure if my boys will be there, but you never know ... ;)

Hi all,
I know I've been extremely slack in the blogging department ... I think that eBay has become my latest addiction ... oh no did I admit to that?!

I've had a great time with family over from Tassie and church stuff and college stuff and 'work in town' and Hockey and catching up with friends and 'gyming' ... so that has been keeping me busy. My parents from Tas were over in June for two weeks and we 'popped up' to Broome for 4 days part way through which was great - great weather, great beaches, great bumpy, bull-dusty road to Cape Leveque, great stubbed-bruised toe (oh maybe that bit wasn't too good) - I think that I like using the word "great" a bit too much so I will refrain and start using another word, at least for the rest of this blog ;)

On a dissapointing note I had a bit of a let down with a poor turnout to a forum I had arranged for home group leaders, and I felt led to send an empassioned email out this morning for those who didn't attend to ruminate on ... it's tough motivating 'volunteers' - often feels like pulling teeth - when I 'know' that I am doing stuff that will assist them in their roles, etc. etc. But the main thing is being in it together, not seemingly opposed or in competition. Anyway God's been speaking to me about my heart for seeing people nurted and fed for mission in their communities, workplaces, schools ...

A big call, but not impossible when all 191 member states of the United Nations have agreed to implement the Millenium Development Goals (MDG’s), which if adhered to will halve global poverty by the year 2015. The targets are there, structures are in place and the promises have been made - now all we need is for them to be kept! That’s where people like you come in to it. We want to make sure our government knows Australians expect them to keep their promise when it comes to the MDG’s. To this end there is much we can do, individually, locally and on a global scale. Micah Challenge

"And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

The 'Micah Challenge' campaign aims to deepen Christian engagement with the poor and to influence leaders of rich and poor nations to fulfil their public promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and so halve absolute global poverty by 2015. All 191 members states of the United Nations have promised to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The Goals include measurable, time-bound targets addressing poverty and hunger, education, maternal and child health, the prevalence of diseases including HIV/AIDs, gender equality, the environment, debt, trade justice and aid.

I, along with two other TEAR representatives, met with other Christian aid/education groups yesterday to form a local committee to look at ways to educate and mobilise Perth Christians and the wider Perth community, and achieve policy change. If you, or people you know of, are passionate about reversing the widening gap between the haves and have-nots and see that justice is done check out the Micah website and sign the 'Micah Call'.

A Great Big Melting Pot

While previously I have pictured, and spoke of, next year being a 'blank canvas' in terms of what God has got in terms for me, but last weekend I was given the picture of a big mixing pot full of all of my ideas, hopes, plans & dreams for the future ... each requiring a step of faith on my part and/or a movement of God to open 'doors'.
Speaking with 'Big L' on Sunday we were given a further picture of a God's refining flame under the pot - just like in traditional gold or silver refining - burning off all the junk and impurities that may hamper my plans or twist the good news of what is in store ... something for me to pray and ponder!

A Light that penetrates the Dark

I had the opportunity to do the devotion this morning for our church's Craft Group and starting with the following riddle:
It can not be seen, can not be felt, can not be heard, can not be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills, & empty holes it fills.It comes first and follows after, ends life, kills laughter.

What could it be referring to? Well it is DARKNESS! (it's from Lord of the Rings for those interested)

I spoke about the timeless theme of Light & Dark, especially God's light which penetrates even the darkest recesses. The following verses are good to read:
Genesis 1:1-5 -> separation of Light from the Dark in the Beginning
Psalm 139:11-12 -> Even in the dark places, God's light finds us
Luke 11:33-36 -> Need to let our Light be seen and let it shine to others
John 12:35-36a -> Trust in the Light

I finished with two questions:
Are you in the light or the dark? Who are you trusting in?
Are you shining your light to others?

A busy few days

Well it seems like ages since I posted ... I'll use the age old reason (or is that excuse?) of being busy, busy, busy ...
Monday spent the full day at church finalising details for the Term 2 LifeStreams courses as well as preparing the first night of my course (Understanding the Bible); that night I met with my mentor Clint for a couple of hours at Cafe Villa and really progressed in a few areas. Tuesday I was working in town from 7.30 to 5.30 working casually at my engineering job and then caught the bus back home for a quick change and off to Youth church and my boys smalls group - it was first night back for the term so it was good to get back with the guys and do life a bit with them and Richard who does the group with me. Wednesday was at church setting up for the Life Streams courses which included making up nearly 50 extra folders for participants (I was ably helped by Sophie though) and setting up the various rooms for the courses; I managed to catch a quick gym workout with my mate Rod (I pushed him hard but he caught up with me...) before heading back to church for the LifeStreams courses which went really well - nearlly 70 people doing 6 courses dealing with Bible, gifts, Creation, First Aid, Emotions, and ministry! Today I was back in town for a bit more 'tentmaking' and am now enjoying a rest in front of the new series of the Amazing Race.

Mixed results

Oh well the Kangaroos run had to end sometime, but they put up a good fight going down by 10 points to the Crows. The sporting upside for the weekend was the 1-0 win to my hockey team in a spiteful grudge-match to the whingeing 'men' of Aquinas.

On another note I had an unexpected, but obviously needed sleep-in, that sadly saw me miss the ACOM graduation down in Mandurah. So apologies and congratulations to David L'Verty, David Stanford and John Bond on recognition of completing your studies... Expect to see my name among ACOM graduates next year :)

Yep I'm back from my travels over east at my brother's place in Beaudesert, Qld (Gold Coat hinterland). I had a great time spending time with both close and distant relies (met my great-aunt and her family for the first time), seeing a bit more of God's creation and doing some rather arduous but worthwhile mountain climbs.

Now back to it! After getting in at 10.45pm last night I had formation group at 7am in Greenwood and then had to catch up on a few chores like going to HBF, re-stocking the fridge, unpacking, and mowing the lawn. It's caught up on my now as I catch-up on the LOST and Amazing Race from last week before I see tonights... Then into to church tomorrow to get next weeks LifeStreams courses sorted :)

Eastward bound

Tomorrow I flight east to Bris-Vegas (also commonly known as Brisbane) to stay with my brother in the country town of Beaudesert (about 40 minutes inland from the Gold Coast). It will be a bit of a family holiday as my parents and one of my grandmothers will also be flying up from Tassie. Looking forward to it, though the packing at the moment is a bit of a chore, but I have Mythbusters on the TV to distract me.

- am I depending on God alone, or doing it in my own strength?
- do I ever put God to the test?
- do I worship God alone or is there something/someone that gets in the way?
- have I left everything behind to follow Jesus?
- are people attracted to the gospel through me?

It's been a great weekend! Saw the mighty Kangaroos chalk up anothjer win on Friday night (that makes 4-0 for the season so far); home stuff, Hockey and catching up with my Youth smalls guys Saturday; and doing life with Kids church, watching the V8s and seeing the Dockers get whooped Sunday. Heading to Sund@y7 tonight, which is looking at the authenticity of the Bible as it addresses some of the untruths kindled by books like the Da Vinci Code - shouls be good. Should link in well also with a course I am leading for LifeStreams in May on Understanding the Bible... anyway back to the V8s and seeing Greg Murphy cut Ambrose down to size!
